The logo of Russia’s state gas company Gazprom was emblazoned on the shirts of players at the soccer club Toennies chaired. In Germany, Toennies’ story is far from unique. At the centre of Gazprom’s influence campaign was Schalke 04, the soccer club Toennies chaired at the time and which Gazprom began sponsoring in 2006. Russian gas imports have dropped dramatically and Germany is supplying tanks and other weapons systems to Ukraine. In 2001 Toennies assumed another of his older brother’s roles – chairman of soccer club Schalke 04.

[1/3] Ukrainian service members ride tanks, as Russia's attack on Ukraine continues, near the frontline town of Bakhmut, Donetsk region, Ukraine February 21, 2023. "The enemy, having an advantage in the resource of human mobilisation, is deliberately intensifying hostilities in an effort to deplete the units of the armed forces of Ukraine," Gromov said. "To try to capture Bakhmut, the occupiers have used the most prepared units of the regular forces." 'STEPPING STONE'Donetsk and Luhansk are two of four regions that Russia has declared part of Russia although it does not fully control of either. Russia controls nearly a fifth of Ukraine but has suffered a number of setbacks in recent months as Ukrainian forces counter-attacked, using weapons received from Western allies.
KYIV, Jan 12 (Reuters) - Russia is building up its forces in Ukraine but Ukrainian forces are holding out in fierce fighting for the eastern town of Soledar, Deputy Defence Minister Hanna Malyar said on Thursday. She told a news briefing that the number of Russian military units in Ukraine had risen to 280 from 250 a week earlier as Moscow tried to gain the "strategic initiative". "Fighting is fierce in the Soledar direction," Malyar said. "Russia is driving its own people to the slaughter by the thousands, but we are holding on," she said. Russian forces were trying to cut through Ukrainian lines and surround Ukrainian troops, he said.
Since the early days of the invasion, Mr. Putin has conceded, privately, that the war has not gone as planned. “I think he is sincerely willing” to compromise with Russia, Mr. Putin said of Mr. Zelensky in 2019. To join in Mr. Putin’s war, he has recruited prisoners, trashed the Russian military and competed with it for weapons. Brigadier General Oleksiy Gromov told a military briefing that although he did not expect Moscow to launch an attack from Belarus, Russian was training new troops on its neighbour's soil and had moved military aircraft there. Deputy Defence Minister Hanna Malyar, at the same briefing, warned against allowing complacency to set in after recent Russian military setbacks. Gromov did not say what Russia's aim might be in prolonging the already nearly 10-month-old war.
Looking ahead to 2023, one of the main variables will be the ceiling G7 countries and the EU agree on importing Russian oil. Some of the biggest importers of Russian oil, including China and India, are not part of the initiative. The more Russian oil that is lost to world markets, the greater the likely impact on prices. "If the price cap is around $60 per barrel, Russia will continue to export its oil comfortably." Beyond the price cap and European import ban, Russia's oil sector may also be affected by COVID-19 restrictions in China, an increasingly important buyer of its crude.
After explosions - whose cause is under investigation - damaged the Nord Stream Russian gas pipeline system to Europe under the Baltic Sea, Putin in October proposed setting up a gas hub in Turkey, building on a southern route for exports. "Does Europe need the project, given the determination of the EU countries to forego Russian gas in the nearest future?" A source in Russia's pipeline gas exporting monopoly Gazprom (GAZP.MM) said be believed the hub would facilitate sales. "That will not be Russian gas, but gas from the hub," said the source, who did not want to be named due to the sensitivity of the matter. Neither Gazprom, nor the Kremlin provided a cost estimate for the Turkish hub idea.
Russia has said it will not sell oil to countries that endorse the price cap. A G7 plan to take effect on Dec. 5 will allow the shipping industry to help export Russian oil but only at a set price - the price cap. That would leave a shortfall of 110 tankers should Moscow seek to fully skirt the price cap, Gromov added. POOLING RESOURCES WITH BUYER COUNTRIESRussia may seek to bypass the restrictions by pooling its shipping resources with those of top buyer countries that have yet to endorse the G7 price cap. Between 1 million and 2 million bpd of Russian crude and refined products exports could be shut in, a U.S. Treasury official said.

KYIV, Nov 10 (Reuters) - A senior adviser to Ukraine's president said on Thursday Russia wanted to turn Kherson into a "city of death" after Moscow ordered its troops to withdraw from the southern Ukrainian city. "RF (Russia) wants to turn Kherson into a 'city of death'. Artillery on the left bank plans to turn the city into ruins," Podolyak wrote on Twitter. Ukraine's military said it was still unable to confirm Russian troops were withdrawing from Kherson. Brigadier General Oleksiy Gromov told a briefing that the Ukrainian armed forces own actions had left Russian forces no option but to withdraw.
Russia's Su-57 fifth-generation fighter jet first debuted a decade ago. Russian officials now say that an upgraded Su-57 made its debut flight this month. Despite those setbacks, the United Aircraft Corporation (UAC), a subsidiary of the state-owned tech conglomerate Rostec, has continued the fighter's development — and this week announced that an upgraded Su-57 made its debut flight earlier this month. "On October 21, the upgraded Su-57 fifth-generation plane performed its debut flight at the Gromov Flight Testing Institute's airfield. The aircraft was flown by the Sukhoi Design Bureau test pilot, Hero of Russia Sergey Bogdan.
